Colin Varndell’s wildlife year – the otter
Following years of pollution and persecution, the otter disappeared completely from Dorset, as well as from most other English counties. But this iconic mammal’s fortunes changed when it was afforded protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Gradually it has recovered and is now recorded on waterways throughout the county on a regular basis.
